The EU‐JP project MiWEBA (Millimetre‐Wave Evolution for Backhaul and Access) proposes research and proof of concept of a millimetre‐wave overlay in densely populated heterogeneous networks (HetNet) where millimetre‐wave small cell base stations are integrated into conventional cellular networks. The concept extends the network capacity massively at reasonable cost and without loss of convenience to users.
This technology exhibit demonstrates a backhaul link, developed by the project partners Fraunhofer HHI and Panasonic. Based on a highly integrated radio in combination with a reflectarray, which allows extending the range to several hundred meters, makes the link very cost effective, while reducing the total power consumption below 10 W.
